1st Person:- Pronoun which denotes the person or persons speaking like I, my, me, we, our etc.
2nd Person:- Pronoun which denotes the person or persons spoken to (listener) like you, your, yours etc.
3rd Person:- Pronoun which denotes the person or persons spoken of like she, he, her, him, they, their etc.
Rule:1
Objective case is used after let, like, but, except and preposition.
-Let I open the window. (incorrect)
-Let me open the window. (correct)
-Between you and me there is no problem. (correct)
Rule:2
(a) Nominative case is used after ‘’than’’, if comparison is between two nominatives.
- She drives faster than I. (correct) (as comparison is between, She and I)
(b) Objective case is used after ‘’than’’, if the comparison is between two objects.
- she loves you more than me. (correct) (as comparison is between you and I; you is object)
Rule:3
Good manners require that the order of personal pronouns in a sentence should be 231. (2nd person, 3rd person, 1st person)
- I, you and he must work together. (incorrect)
- You, he and I must work together. (correct)
- You and he are going to watch a movie together. (correct)
However, while accepting guilt, mistakes or any unpleasant acts, we should follow 123 order.
- I, you and he have done this mischief. (correct)
Rule: 4
Noun is not used after Possessive Pronoun i.e. mine, yours, theirs hers etc.
- Your shirt is old but mine shirt is new. (incorrect)
- Your shirt is old but mine is new. (correct)
Note: Noun is used after possessive adjectives i.e. our, your, her, their etc
-This is my book.
‘this’ and ‘these’ are used for persons & things which are near to the speaker; ‘that’ and ‘those’ are used for the persons & things which are away from the speaker. ‘this’ & ‘that’ is used for one person or thing while ‘these’ and ‘those’ are used for more than one person or thing.
Rule:6
Each other is used for two persons/ things and one another is used for more than two persons /things.
- The four friends hate each other. (incorrect)
- The four friends hate one another. (correct)
⇒ If there would have been two friends, then correct sentence would be
- The two friends hate each other. (correct)
